SC extends time limit for making Arbitration award and completing pleadings; permits service through email, Text msg, Whatsapp   Jul 14, 2020

The Supreme Court of India, vide orders dated 10th July, 2020, considering the Pandemic situation, has extended the  time limit for passing arbitral award under Section 29A of the said Act. 

Similarly, Section 23(4) of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 provides for a time period of 6 months for the completion of the statement of claim and defence. The Time limit prescribed under Section 23(4) has also been extended.

The aforesaid extension will operate in accordance with the earlier orders dated 23rd March 2020 and 6th May 2020


The Supreme court has also permitted service of notices, summons, exchange of pleadings by e-mail, FAX, commonly used instant messaging services, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, Signal etc.
